The Great Big Dig 2014 - Raising Funds For The IWK Health Centre

The IWK Health Centre is a hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia that provides care to women, children, and youth from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

This year, The Great Big Dig, is raising funds for a much needed piece of equipment, a Cardiac Bypass Machine, to be used in the Operating Suites at the IWK Health Centre.

The cardiac bypass machine is responsible for keeping patients alive by replacing the function of the heart and lungs during complex heart surgery. It circulates blood throughout the patient’s body and at times is used to perform dialysis during surgery. The cardiac bypass machine enables surgeons to stop the patient’s heart so that surgery can be performed inside the heart – for example valve repairs.

As the only pediatric cardiac centre in the Maritimes, the IWK cares for patients requiring cardiac care from birth to 18 years of age.
