What is ice damning? Does a metal roof system prevent this?

Ice damming is the process in which melted snow refreezes on a roof and creates frozen obstructions that result in melt-water buildup and can eventually lead to roof damage and/or leakage into the structure.  Ice damning  tends to form on the roofs lower edge above the overhang/ eaves; and is caused by rising heat which escapes from the interior of a home or from excess slush from the eaves troughs.

The main problems associated with ice damming, and excessive water build-up is a roof leak.  Unfortunately roof leaks often go undetected.  Long term water penetration will often result in rotted roof deck, walls, and framing.  As well as reduce the effectiveness of insulation, create mold, and peel and blister drywall/ paint potentially costing thousands in damage.

Choosing proven roof materials, conducting bi annual roof inspections, and proper  installation techniques, greatly decreases your chances of experiencing these problems.

One of the most effective categories of products which combat ice damming is steel/metal roofing. According to the Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute (CSSBI), these types of roofs are designed to meet or exceed strict weather and water penetration standards set out by the local building codes. While ice formations may still occur on these systems, the design of the roof will usually not allow the melting water to penetrate the roof’s surface. Furthermore, snow and ice are more likely to slide off of a smooth, metal surface, than other materials, and as a result metal/steel roofing tends to shed snow/ice better reducing the frequency of ice damming.

As with all building products, metal roofing alone can never provide 100% protection against ice damning.

1) Choose a proven roof material and install a manufacturer suggested ice/water shields at the eaves.
2) Invest in improving attic insulation in order  to limit heat loss
3) Install baffles to allow for air flow at the eaves
4) Ensure your eaves troughs are lower than the roof line to allow for snow/ice to slide off
5)  Regularly clear your eaves trough of debris
6) Bi-annual roof inspections ESPECIALLY if your roof covering is comprised of a material other than metal.
