A look at fasteners… Nails or Screws… What’s best for your metal roof installation?

Fasteners are components of a roofing system which adhere roofing materials to the roof deck, and it is very important to select the correct fastener type for metal construction in order to ensure a sturdy and weather-tight application. These components can be either primary, which transfer; dead, design, imposed, or wind loads on a building, or secondary, which provide lateral resistance for securing flashing, sidewall laps, and other material to sheeting/decking. Nevertheless, any fastener type must be as durable as the metal roofing system itself.

While, fasteners are available in a variety of substrates/materials with different levels of corrosion resistance and/or durability, metal roofing manufacturers  provide specific recommendations for selecting fasteners for their systems. Having said that, two general types of fasteners are usually recommended, screws or nails.  Deciding on which may be best for your project is very important, so we'll explore them in more detail below.

Screws are usually identified by material composition, surface/coat, shank/point/drive type, and head shape/size. The most commonly used screws in metal roofing are “self-drilling”, which have a drill point in the tip of the fastener, or “self-tapping”, which tap their own threads into the attachment material. Common head shapes are hex, flat, pancake, and wafer, and screw size is usually designated by length (inches/cm) and diameter (gauge).

Most roofing contractors install products on wood substrate. This substrate tends to expand and contract during variations in temperature/weather, and as such will try to eject installed fasteners. Screws, as opposed to nails, tend to be stronger, and have a better pull-out value than nails and therefore are considered to be a more effective fastener for metal steep slope applications, especially in climates with wide variations in seasonal temperatures.  Screws used in this application should be galvanized and coated with special polymer/paint in order to resists corrosion. Although more expensive and require a bit more time to install, they are a vital part of any metal roof system to ensure a weather tight application.

Nails, on the other hand, while less expensive, and requiring less time/labour to install, nails are not typically recommended for residential steel roofing applications. Expansion and contraction of the shaft can cause a “pull-out” effect which will allow water to penetrate under the roof surface. However, while nails have been associated with roofing, they are more suitable as fasteners for other inferior roofing systems, such as asphalt shingles or wood shakes.

Over-driving/ over-tightening any type of fastener in to the metal can be problematic, causing dimples in roofing, limiting movement during expansion/contraction, creating unwanted stress, and possible leakage.

Choosing a metal roof is an investment for any home; to ensure longevity and quality in the installation, it is critical that the purchase of the correct fastener is given serious consideration in the early planning stages of a project. By selecting the correct fastener in a metal construction application, one will ensure a strong and weather-tight installation.

There have been cases where the choice of fastener has caused roof system warranties to become void.  Therefore, it is highly recommended to go with the suggested manufacturer fastener.   If you are planning on replacing your existing roof, or are installing a new one, and you would like to learn more about Vicwest recommended fasteners, please visit our website.
